Whilst driving the Birdsville Track several days ago, I saw an apparently huge and apparently jet-black cat bounding across the road in the middle of nowhere. Not able to stop and photo or film it as it was gone in a flash. Hard to determine the actual size and I realise such measurements reported from such brief first-hand accounts can be notoriously over-exaggerated, but to me it DID seem to be ‘small puma’ size. I’ve read where the feral cat population is high in the Outback and they can get quite large (as elsewhere). Was definitely much larger and more muscular looking that a few other feral cats I’ve seen in Qld and SA in the last few weeks, which did look normal house-cat size or a bit larger (and not black!).
